Amid Unsettling Revelations, It's Time to Defund
By Congressman Doug Lamborn
America and Colorado have arrived at a crucial moment in history. Until now, the issues of aborted fetal tissue research and taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood have been pushed to the side or obscured by inflated promises of dynamic medical breakthroughs that never materialize.
The discussion has now changed irrevocably. Brave whistleblowers have shined the harsh light of truth on the gruesome nature of the trafficking of aborted babies’ body parts. Our society can no longer ignore the sad, sickening truth that we now see in these heartbreaking videos. Some of this, sad to say, is happening right here in Colorado.
It’s time to get back to the pro-life policies that Ronald Reagan implemented but that Bill Clinton eliminated. And I’ve introduced legislation to do exactly that. Throughout my entire public service, I have been a 100% supporter of life, whether in Congress or earlier in the Colorado Legislature. Although Colorado has a mixed record on the life issue, our state has the opportunity to be on the frontline for fighting back against the callous culture of death and destruction that has taken root in our nation.
As a part of this critical fight, I have introduced legislation to put an end nationally to the horrifying practice of bartering for the body parts of aborted babies. My bill, H.R. 3215, the End Trafficking of the Terminated Unborn Act, will prohibit any person from soliciting or knowingly acquiring human fetal tissue obtained pursuant to an induced abortion. My bill also removes the authority for funding research on fetal tissue obtained pursuant to an induced abortion.
Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for the purchase of aborted babies’ body parts. Fifteen years ago, when I was serving in the Colorado State Senate, I introduced and passed a bill designed to prohibit the sale of fetal body parts. Unfortunately, it appears that Colorado State University is relying on a legal loophole to purchase fetal tissue.
Even though they try to gloss over what they’re doing, CSU’s past and current fetal tissue providers are under investigation and are being implicated in the whistleblowing being done by the Center for Medical Progress. The University has committed to investigating their research practices, and I certainly appreciate this step. However, it is simply not enough. CSU must stop using babies’ body parts from induced abortions in their research, period.
There are important ethical, moral, and legal questions surrounding this practice that many Coloradans find incredibly troubling. This research is conducted at the expense of taxpayers. It is profoundly wrong for taxpayers to be forced to provide funding to support research involving induced abortions. That’s why it’s time to defund Planned Parenthood.
Any legitimate healthcare services the organization provides for women can easily be provided and funded by other providers who decline to do abortions. The inherent fungibility of money means that taxpayers have been subsidizing Planned Parenthood’s abortion factories for far too long. Do not be deceived by claims of the political left to the contrary. Planned Parenthood’s primary functions are to provide abortion on-demand and to traffic in aborted babies’ body parts.
The choice is clear. We must stand up to protect the most vulnerable among us, not treat them like spare parts for medical research. I understand that it is sometimes awkward to talk about things like this. The distractions from culture and the mainstream media are overwhelming. Talk about lion poaching. Talk about sports. Talk about Donald Trump. Talk about anything except these barbaric videos.
Stay involved, contact your federal elected officials and encourage them to support H.R. 3215, the End Trafficking of the Terminated Unborn Act. Encourage Colorado lawmakers to broaden my earlier state prohibition on the sale of fetal body parts to include purchases. Most importantly, do not rest until taxpayer funding is once and for all removed from those who traffick the body parts of aborted babies. Your efforts will be essential if our nation is going to embrace a culture of life rather than a culture of death.
